    MILFORD -- If the new location of Joey C's Tex-Mex Roadhouse feels like the set of a Western movie, there is a good reason for that.
    Owners Ania and Joe Catalano hired a designer who worked on the movie "True Grit'' to help them capture the ambiance of the kind of place where John Wayne might have been a regular. And, in fact, "the Duke," along with Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and other old-time Western stars are at the Boston Post Road watering hole.

    MILFORD -- Let's face it, barbecue will never be health food.
    But at Joey C's, which opened last month at 11 Berwyn St., it is as close as it is going to get. That's because owners Joseph Catalano, a chef trained at the Culinary Institute of America, and his wife, Ania Catalano, a cookbook author, use all natural and fresh ingredients. Free-range chicken and meats smoked on the premises mean few chemicals and preservatives make it to the table.

    Matt Gordon, the chef and owner of Urban Solace, a modern-American restaurant in San Diego, spent months of work and $15,000 making sure the restaurant's sodas, cocktail mixers, ice cream and sauces all contained the same ingredient: sugar.

    A growing number of restaurants across the country are retooling recipes to replace ingredients containing high-fructose corn syrup with other sweeteners including honey, agave nectar, golden syrup and palm sugar.

    I always get very excited meeting young ambitious entrepreneurs especially ones with a passion for the restaurant business. Joe & Ania Catalano, owners of Joey C’s Roadhouse Restaurant in Milford definitely fall into this category.

    The eatery, which features authentic southern BBQ and Tex-Mex fare, originally opened its doors in March of 2010 on Berwyn Street in the Devon section of Milford was basically take-out only with a few tables. Joe & Ania (also Milford residents) developed an excellent reputation and began their journey to expansion. This hardworking couple opened their new Milford location on the Boston Post Road in January 2012 featuring a full bar & private room for special events. Most nights the place is packed with many loyal customers who are BBQ devotees from across the state and regularly make the trip to Milford – again and again.
